ROUND BY ROUND REPORT JOE "SILKY" SIMONETTE VS DON "THE BULL" WAXTER SCHEDULED FOR 12 ROUNDS MAY 21, 2005

Round 1: They begin by trading body punches. Following a Simonette double jab, Waxter tees off with a series of single and double jabs, then follows with two clean combinations. They trade body shots, and the round ends with a Simonette jab.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 2: Each trade jabs thru the first minute, then trade body shots and combinations. Waxter spends the last minute of the round working to the head and body, with Simonette landing a series of jabs.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 3: Simonette opens early with a body punch, then a double jab. Waxter counters with a left and right to the body. The referee halts the action and issues Simonette a standing eight count. The two trade jabs and again, the referee gives Simonette another eight count. Simonette lands a jab, then a combination, but Waxter answers with a shot to the body.       Round winner: Waxter Official scoring after three rounds: Judge 1: 36 1/2 – 25 1/2 Waxter Judge 2: 30 – 26 Waxter Judge 3: 30 – 27 Waxter       Round 4: Waxter opens with a stiff jab, and the referee issues Simonette a standing eight count. Waxter lands a combination after a Simonette jab, and it appears the referee is ready to stop the bout. Catching Waxter on the ropes, Simonette lands a hard right to the body, then drops Waxter at 1:41 of the round with a hard left hook. Each trade jabs, then Simonette lands a three punch combination at the bell.       Round winner: Simonette       Round 5: In the most action packed round of the bout, its give and take from bell to bell. Each mix jabs, body shots, combinations and hooks and crosses, with Simonette getting the better of it, with a late combination and hook enabling him to take the frame.       Round winner: Simonette       Round 6: Waxter starts early, going back to the body and head. Simonette answers in kind, and steals the round with a right cross that stops Waxter in his tracks.       Round winner: Simonette Official scoring after six rounds: Judge 1: 66 – 65 1/2 Simonette Judge 2: 56 – 56 Even Judge 3: 57 – 57 Even       Round 7: Simonette lands a jab, then Waxter responds with a hard jab, a combination, three unanswered body shots, then another combination. The two end the round trading jabs.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 8: Simonette takes the first minute of the round. Waxter dominates minute two. Simonette appears to have control of the final minute until Waxter sends him into the ropes with a combination.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 9: Simonette starts quick, landing two successive body punches. The two trade jabs, Waxter getting the better of it. Simonette catches Waxter with a hard right cross, then two jabs. Stunned, Waxter backs up, only to be caught with a vicious left hook that sends him to the canvas just seconds before the bell sounds to end the round.       Round winner: Simonette Official scoring after nine rounds: Judge 1: 93 1/2 – 92 Simonette Judge 2: 83 – 83 Even Judge 3: 84 – 84 Even       Round 10: Waxter starts strong early, mixing jabs and body punches. Simonette responds with two body shots of his own. Waxter closes with a hard double jab, a body punch, and a jab.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 11: The two decide to meet in ring center, and in a back and forth round Waxter seems to gain the edge with his work to the body. A clean right cross to Simonette's head ices the round for Waxter.       Round winner: Waxter       Round 12: The two touch gloves, then Waxter lands a jab. Both are tired, and seem to clinch at every opportunity. Simonette lands a jab, and as Waxter retreats, Simonette lunges forward with a left hook and it finds a home on Waxter’s jaw. Down goes Waxter, and the referee counts him out at 1:20 of the round.       Result: Simonette wins the bout via Knockout at 1:20 of the 12th round.       Post bout notes: The official scoring after eleven rounds was as follows: Judge 1: 110 – 105 1/2 Waxter Judge 2: 103 – 101 Waxter Judge 3: 104 – 102 Waxter       Entering the 12th round, Simonette needed a huge round or a knockout to win. Simonette now earns the right to meet the Olander - Swisher winner for the Pittsburgh Chapter #1 Heavyweight Title in the fall.
